Venezuelan Rap!

Venezuelan rap holds a big part of my heart and my respect. Their lyrics really get to me and I can relate so much to a lot of the rappers I will mention (especially my favorite one), because of how close Venezuela is to Colombia, so we have a lot in common but also because a lot of their struggles and the things they have to fight, we've also fought it and suffered it like them.
Now I'm not saying we're the same or that we've went through the same, but a lot of things we share and have in common.
The first rapper that rapped in Spanish came from Venezuela, Perucho Conde with his song La Cotorra Criolla, introduced to LatinAmericans the first rap song in Spanish in 1980.
Rap didn't get a big following until 1997 with the creation of groups like La Corte, consisting of Bostas Brain, Russo40, Bless Killa and DJ Trece (who is one of the responsibles for making rap grow big in Venezuela), rap in Venezuela started to be a thing, a culture.
After that, different artist came out to make rap music and here we are. I will mention some that are more relevant now and that were big after the 2000s, since this is the time when Venezuelan really got to the top.

"A master of improvisation and great lyrics", is what famous Puerto Rican rapper Residente, winner in multiple occasions of the Latin Grammy award called him. "The best of all time in our continent and outside of it", it's what cuban rapper Rxnde Akozta called him. "An inspiration and an artist that helped Hip Hop and rap in Spanish grow", is what Nach, Spanish rapper nominated to the Latin Grammy award called him. I could go on and on mentioning every artist that has shown their respect and admiration to the incredible and amazingly skilled Tyrone José González Orama best known as Canserbero.
Born in Caracas in March 11, 1988, Canserbero showed great interest in music since he was young. When he was 13 years old he felt attracted to rap and regueton music but the tragic loss of his older brother made him lean more towards rap and I think most of his fans can agree on being thankful for that. His songs, written with amazing skills, lyrics so profound, so raw and yet so appealing and compelling and relatable, made him gain a huge following around 2010 until today. An avid reader and a serious writer of poetry with music, he inspired everyone he knew and a lot more people that only know him through his music. You must be wondering why am I speaking in past tense about him but you probably figured it out by now. The world lost Canserbero back in 2015 when he was only 26 years old. His death was a complete mess that is still hasn't been resolved and I rather not focus on that.
This blog is mainly a way for me to share and make the English-speaking community of the world to know more about rap in Spanish, but at the end is also a personal view of my music taste so I will share something personal about my experience with my favorite rapper.
Personally, he is my all time favorite rapper because he was one of the first rappers that showed me that rap wasn't all gangster music or violent music, but a way to express different feelings and a way to ask for a change. He is not only my favorite rapper ever, but also one of my favorite artists ever and a huge inspiration and someone I will always look up to.
Every song that I've listened from him, has made me reflect on life, on the things that matter and the things that don't. As you might be thinking from what I've said, it was a great loss for me to know he was no longer with us.
In 2014, exactly in November 16, there was a festival that was going on in different countries of LatinAmerica, it was called Sin Fronteras, and in Bogotá, Colombia, it was the day I attended the concert. I was very excited because I was about to see some artists that I really liked and admire for their music such as Spanish rapper Rapsusklei, Venezuelan rapper McKlopedia and obviously Canserbero. I had a blast! I was so impressed by how good he was live and how humble he was, it was also impressive that he was very confident of his skills but never to the point of being cocky. We all cheered and sang with him his songs. It was a special moment because it was my first and only time to see him live, because only 2 months later, he would lose his life. I felt terribly sad and couldn't help to think about how just a few months before I was having one of the greatest days of my life and that day he was dead. People think is silly to be sad about the death of someone you didn't even know but, when an artist makes music that is so relatable and music that helps you grow as a person and inspires you, you can't help but feel sad and feel like his or her music were a big part of your life.
Canserbero will always have a huge part in my heart and I will always remember him as one of the few artists that made me be better and change my view of the world. So with this blog, I'd like to honor him by sharing with whomever reads this, his music, his work in life that will transcend for years to come. #EternoCanserbero

The next one is an amazingly skilled rapper that has incredible lyrics and that has always known how to make great songs. Lil Supa is one of the most respected rappers today, due to his commitment to rap and to his hard work and contribution, he's become one artist that everyone loves and admires. He's been making music since 2000 and has collaborated with many different artists, such as Canserbero, Rapsusklei and many others. His sound is influenced by jazz, rock, blues and thanks to different djs and producers, he's been able to express and share his message just the way he's wanted.

From Caracas to the world, Apache de Las Minas, has planted his seed in this world with his music. He started his career back in 2003, although he started as a breakdancer, he then moved to rap. He dropped his first solo album in 2008 and his career went up thanks to his collaboration with Canserbero, the album Apa y Can. After this he's been working with different artist from Venezuela such as Akapellah, Lil Supa, Gona and other reggae artist like Morodo or Kafu Banton. With 6 albums under his belt, his career is still successful and he clearly doesn't seem like he wants to stop anytime soon.

Rap in Spanish without a doubt has more male rappers than female rappers. Not because of a lack of talent because there are plenty female rappers that are amazing at what they're doing but I think it has to be a lack of support from their male counterparts. I can't really tell for sure but, what I am certain is that female rappers are incredible artists. A huge representative of rap in Spanish in general, is the one and only Gabylonia. She's been active since 2004 and is responsible for carrying the banner of a best new world, a world with justice for everyone, especially for minorities, the people in need. Her lyrics strongly criticize society and offer insight and sometimes possible solutions for some problems in our latin society. She was nominated to the Latin Grammy award along with rock group Jarabe de Palo with their song 'Somos'.

Akapellah is the big guy from Venezuela who's music inspiration and influence comes from the 90s rap. Because of his size and the way he looks, he's said that people think that his been influenced or inspired by Notorious B.I.G. but he says that he was more of a Tupac fan. He's been active since 2004 and his career keeps growing, his following grows every year due to his talent and his hard work. He is one of the young ones and clearly he will represent rap and hip hop for years to come.

The last one I will mention in this blog will be one of my favorite rappers that has incredible music and that keeps showing that consistency and talent can create great music. Mcklopedia is to me one of the most skilled rappers that's come from Venezuela. Winner of Redbull's La Batalla de los Gallos, a contest where the most skilled improvise lyrics with a beat and it has happened in most Spanish speaking countries. He's not only a rapper but he's also a great singer and his music keeps reaching more people. A complete professional! He's been around since 2002 and he's collaborated with Canserbero, Apache, Akapellah, Kase O, Banda Baston, Cultura Profetica, La Vida Boheme, Rapper School, Rapsusklei, Rayden and the list goes on.
