Mexican Rap!

Rap in Mexico's been around since the 80s. Influenced by the hip-hop culture from the US, rap was introduced in Mexico by the comedian Memo Rios with a Spanish version of Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang. There are a couple of rap artists that although they are Mexican or have Mexican heritage, I will not cover as much as others, because they rap mainly in English, like Cypress Hill for example (although they do have a complete album in Spanish, most of their work is in English and this blog is about rap in Spanish).

Sindicato del Terror is considered the first actual rap group from Mexico, they made music from 'Mexicans for Mexicans, from the hood for the hood.'

There is a group that is very important to Mexican rap history, Vieja Guardia. They are a fundamental part for the rap scene to grow stronger in Mexico. They consist of Petate Funky, Kartel Aztlan, Dr. Zupreeme and MC Luka, and they founded the group back in 1997.

A great song that I like from them is

This next group is probably one of the most recognizable groups when it comes to rap in Spanish, especially because their music have been used in a few movies.
Control Machete consisted of DJ Toy Selectah, Pato Machete and Fermin IV. The group was active from 1996 to 2004. According to the members of this group, they are on an indefinite break.

A few songs that are very popular from them are:

The next one will be probably the most recognized group from this blog and it will be a special mention because their main genre is not rap but they did rap in their beginnings.
Molotov's success is nothing but the proof of hard work and stoicism. Their debut album ¿Dónde jugarán las niñas? was out in 1997 and it sold more than a million copies. Throughout the yeas they're recognized as one of the most influential rock and rap groups around latinamerica. Their great lyrics that criticize Mexican government and society are combined with great music.
I have nothing but massive respect for them and their music and their success looks like it's only growing every single year.

There are plenty songs that I could recommend but I will share the ones that are rap:

Que no te Haga Bobo Jacobo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaQWnxdOGZo

The next group is a huge exponent in the genre. The name Cartel de Santa is well known in LatinAmerica and Spain. I think that whenever you want to talk about Mexican rap, Cartel de Santa is definitely one of the names that pop first in my head. They consist of Babo, Rowan Rabia and Mono. Until 2014 Dharius was a member of the group. They've been making music since 1996 and they've changed their music throughout the years. They go with the trends, with the flow and that's why they're still successful.

Songs I recommend:
El Arte del Engaño: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLv9L8OKz4U
El Dolor del Micro Ft Julieta Venegas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp1AuqF0sns

This would be considered the old school of Mexican rap, so I'll cover the rest in a different blog.
